After taking a few weeks off because of getting married, I was finally able to get a good post written, edited, and posted over at TVverdict.com.
A lot of people have complained that Stargate Universe started off slowly. Even I complained that, as much as I enjoyed it, I couldn’t care about the characters to begin with so the plots never resonated heavily with me. Being relegated to the Friday Night Death slot might have been the best thing to happen to SGU, however, because while only eight episodes have aired so far, the decreased expectation for high ratings for the time slot has allowed the creators to organically create an ensemble that actually fits together rather than having every character fill an archetypal role audiences come to expect.

Hmm I’m surprised that SGU isn’t doing so well. I thought it was going strong. Haven’t seen any of it myself unfortunately as it’s only availabe on cable or satellite and I have neither /sob

If there’s any way you can get your hands on the 8 episodes that have aired, Gordon, do it. I think you’d really like it. It’s just a different flavor of SG than the other two series.
That may be why it’s not doing well, incidentally. Stargate has a certain flavor to it, and even Atlantis suffered a bit from being too different from the RDA-inspired SG-1. Loyal fans don’t take kindly to the changes, and the changes aren’t enough to get the BSG crowd involved.
It’s an age old problem for IPs who want to cater to new crowds.
