Ah, it all makes sense now. The SGMMO is indeed the Cheyenne Mountain "Last Starfighter" trick. It's all a front!

Or something. I'm no good at conspiracy theories. :) Thanks, Pete!

I agree, that game looked like it had promise, and I liked the notion of puzzles perhaps most of all. I read that they got some angel funding (probably something you mentioned, Pete), and will finish it, but production limbo is a scary place.

Oh, and for the record... I *want* to like SGU, and it sounds like a good premise with some good mechanics... I just don't care for the trappings. :(

Really? That makes me sad now because I was so looking forward to that game. It had such potential...

And how did I miss the Sliders parallel? I must be slipping in my old age.

Tesh:

** Minor ep 1 spoilers **

My understanding is that the game Eli was playing when he solved the puzzle was actually in-game footage from Stargate Worlds. For whatever that's worth...

Aye, I've not watched it yet, but Eli looks to be the clear McKay replacement, and Rush just looks Baltarish, even in the cast photo. I think they are trying too hard to pull in the Battlestar Galactica and "edgy, young" crowd.

I came to SG-1 as one of those coveted youth demographic members, and I detested the "edgy, dark, sexy" episodes. Stargate is all about intelligence and humor under pressure to me, and even the later SG-1 and most of Atlantis just rubs me the wrong way. It just felt that the writers didn't respect me as a consumer any more, and only wanted to pull the titillation and thrill levers in an effort to hit the jackpot, complete with blingy graphics to help turn off the brain.

I do like the Sliders-esque premise, though. I just think it deserves better treatment.

I felt very much like SG-1 seasons 9 and 10 were a different show shoehorned into the Stargate framework. Atlantis took it a step further. Universe is just beyond the threshold where I lose interest.

I don't really wish them ill, but neither am I all that interested in it... and that makes me sad.

*Eli's an MMO nut, huh? I wonder if there were meant to be ties to the Stargate MMO. Not sure how I feel about that.

You forgot the Sliders influence (the fixed time periods in each new locale).

I wish I could be as excited as you are about the series; I was left feeling a little disappointed.

I had the same "didn't like" as you did re the cast, but for me it was a bigger deal: I really didn't like anyone in this first episode, except maybe the blonde medic (tho I can't remember her name). Eli is clearly going to be the Rodney McCay but I just can't relate to someone that young (I acknowledge that this is a very personal issue) and Rush felt too familiar in a Baltar kind of way...

I'll keep watching, but if this is going to be the Eli and wanna-be Summer Glau show, I don't think I'll be able to relate to it.

Interesting! I cannot watch SGU yet, we poor Germans have to wait.

I am a bit concernced about the characters. I believe that the early SG1 characters were much better than those in Atlantis, but after watching it for a while I got to like at least some of them. But well, SGU is fairly new, give the characters some time to mature.

But when you say it is still okay despite some flawed characters early on, I am somewhat relieved of my fears. The world needs proper SciFi series, after all! Or well, I do. :)
