As much as I don't like vampires, I love it when an obscure property blatantly does something better than the mainstream one. I thought "Equilibrium" did both "V for Vendetta" and "The Matrix" better than either mainstream film did. I loved both of the big names, but I thought the issues were dealt with better in "Equilibrium"

Try "Let the Right One In" (Swedish) too. Very neat vampire-tween film. Or as one reviewer succinctly said, "Everything Twilight wanted to be - and wasn't."

The Orphanage is one of those rare gems that is suspenseful, scary at times (depends on your caliber of course) and a really, really good story and it doesn't have any gore.

Oh yeah. Big horror fan. Love love love it. I'm even thinking about trying to propose a Modern Horror: Poe, Lovecraft, and King class to the committee sometime this year and see if they let me teach it.

I *still* need to see The Orphanage. I keep meaning to, but never have a chance. I adored "Pan's Labyrinth," so I figure that it has to be at least that good. Plus it's full-out horror, so that will make me love it even more.

See the first one at least, Gordon. I really suggest that. The second one's definitely worth watching if you like that.

As far as it being gratuitous violence, I disagree. At least in the first couple. There's more at play than simply killing people in the movies. The whole premise is that the victims have a clearly outlined way of escape, and they have to make the choice as to whether or not it's worth doing or dying. I see that as making the viewers think by making them empathetic to the Everyman characters instead of gratuitously slaughtering strangers. And every--or almost every--death in the "Saw" films makes up part of a greater narrative, making it more than just blood and gore.

"Hostel," by design, was gratuitous violence, and it is nowhere near as high quality as the first "Saw." The second "Hostel" was one of the worst movies I've ever seen, cashing in entirely on the gore factor of the first and providing no narrative or moral qualms for the audience to ponder.

To be fair, the first one is the smartest. The rest of them try, but never live quite up to it.

I love horror movies for cheap thrills. I'm not ashamed to say that I loved "My Bloody Valentine 3D." Nothing but cheap thrills, but it was so ridiculously fun.

I had no idea you were a horror fan as well. Go you!

For me, the first Saw is a really good story full of dread, isolation and good performances. Let's not forget the great Michael Emerson played one of the two protagonists, although by now he's remembered for something else (Lost, cough).

But, it just kinda went downhill from there. I enjoyed the second one as well, but by now it's just redundant.

The same goes for the Final Destination series. The first two were both great in their own ways, but the later ones were just garbage.

Plus, I definitely feel the Hollywood horror industry needs a change. Foreign horror films are far more interesting now than ever, ("The Orphanage," for example) and America can't keep up with their remakes and sequels.

Not seen any of the Saw films and, to be honest, I don't really fancy them. They seem like gratuitous violence and harm for the sake of it which doesn't appeal to me.

I love horror movies, but I'm much more of a fan of the suspense style or the boogyman style of movies. Saw, and all the horror movies that have followed it's design, just don't cut it for me. I would probably agree that they're smart (I admittedly only watched the first one), but if I wanted smart there are plenty of other styles of movie that I could look to.

I suppose I just like horror movies for cheap thrills :0
