Ok, loads to comment on here! I'll try to keep it cohesive but no promises :)

I enjoyed SG-1 for the most part. When I first saw the pilot, I wasn't completely enamored by it as the first season really does seem to suffer from a lack of budget. However, once the actors got into their strides and the characters developed a bit and the budget increased, the show became a lot better. I'd agree with Tesh that season 3-6 are the best, by far.

I kinda lost interest in the show once RDA's influence started to decline. It seemed like they were dragging it on for the money rather than the purpose of storytelling and entertainment. I've seen that a lot. Smallville, for instance, should've just stopped a couple of years ago but they drag it on and drag it on until they've ruined all continuity by throwing in cheap ideas to boost ratings. Let it die a graceful death.

SG-1 also has a ton of "filler" episodes in it when nothing really happens at all. Plus let's not forget the frequent "montage" episodes in which they just slice together scenes from the previous series. Seriously, we're expected to pay for that? I hate that in any TV show. Personally I'm all up for shorter series, like 12 episodes instead of 24.

As for the boobies. Great stuff. You can never have too many boobies. Adding some nudity to the pilot was a stroke of genius imo. Pardon the pun.

Once you're done with SG-1, check out Star Trek Enterprise. I'm watching season 2 now. It's pretty decent. Nothing on The Wire but not bad at all.

Interesting timing. I just posted a plug for SG-1 on my blog a couple of days ago. It's my favorite series, only rivaled by ST:TNG. You pegged the reasons I like it (and dislike some of it... notably, they are reediting the pilot, sans nudity) nicely.

I will say that SG-1 peaked in seasons 3-6 for me. The first two seasons were a little rough, but still really good, and S7-8 started losing RDA's influence. (He was an exec. producer, and really did a lot to make the show.) S9-10 lost RDA entirely, and took a turn into territory that I felt didn't work well, either as Stargate or as the great sort of stories that really could have been told.

Atlantis is merely OK (though still better than most sci-fi), and I'm really not all that interested in Universe. "Darker, edgier" doesn't do much for me, especially given the excellence of SG-1 S3-6.

Still, here's hoping you and yours enjoy it. I definitely did, as my S1-8 DVD collections attest. :)

Keep an eye out for Window of Opportunity in Season 4. That was my first exposure to SG-1, and is still widely considered the best episode in the franchise. RDA is the man.
