I would love to eventually get into more Lovecraft (I've mentioned a "Modern Horror" class to my department head), but given the developmental nature of this class, I had a hard time getting the students to read the 6 pages of "Six Shots by Moonlight." I think any of the more difficult Lovecraft should be left to higher level classes.

If you absolutely *have* to use television in your class, Firefly is a good one.

However, more Lovecraft would be better-- the man was a genius.

What does Jennifer think about Firefly . . . oh, that cracked me up :)

If you're looking for a point/counterpoint, all you're going to get is a point/even more excited, nerdier point.

Jennifer is a bigger fan than I am, actually. She has presented two papers at academic conferences on the show (one at last year's Slayage and one at this year's Pop Culture Association conference).

I highly suggest going and watching it. There are only around 14 episodes of the show; it was canceled early, but is probably one of my favorites to ever air. Even if you're not a huge sci-fi fan, you'll find something in Firefly to latch onto.

Awesomeness. First, thank you for being a fellow teacher that gets so excited about something that no students can completely turn their backs on it. :) Two, props to you for putting hulu as a link to a college class. These kids have no idea how lucky they are to have a college prof who actually enjoys teaching and learning new things. :) I, obviously, am not the biggest sci fi person; however, in my old age, I have learned to be more open to all kinds of stuff. I really want to go watch Firefly and will do so soon. Thanks. :)

P.S. What does Jennifer think of this show? Sure would love to hear a point/counterpoint about this series. :)

*Sara*
